- VMnet0 - vanishes, and not matter what I run as an Administrator it never shows again. Consequently various virtual machines that rely on it for the automatic bridged connection will not have network access
- VSock - is not installed, and I am informed it has to be done manually. But there is no indication as to how you actually perform a manual installation.
- hcmon - not installed, this is fantastic as it results in the whole installation being rolled back so you end up with nothing.

I'm afraid that the grain directory/table (the vmdk's pointer table) has been heavily damaged (overwritten), and that it's close to impossible to fix it.
In this case I think your best option to recover files is to use a recovery tool which scans the .vmdk file for patterns.
Maybe continuum - who is a data recovery specialist - can give you some advice on how to proceed, and get the best results.
I dont understand your problem.
I downloaded the archive and checked it - the size of 700 mb is correct.
It contains 2 partitions:
1. 200mb : ext
2. 500mb : could not detect the filesystem
I also do not understand why you treat the img with a Converter.
It is already a perfect flat.vmdk.
You only need to create a vmdk descriptorfile to use it with a VM.
Wow - this vmdk is really heavily damaged.
The chance that files larger than a few kb can be recovered is quite poor.
I would suggest to install testdisk on your host. It comes with the tool photorec.
You can then select the filetypes you want to recover.
Unfortunately this will only recover files by their signature. So they will get a random name with a large percentage of damaged files.
Actually this will only make sense if you have very valuable documents stored in this vmdk.

First, Im very new with esxi or any virtual software. I love esxi for so far but i have some problems and i think i need some help.
MB: Asrock x370 taichi with latest bios update
CPU: AMD ryzen 1700
RAM: 16gb ram
So, i try'd to passthrough the asmedia 1062 device.
I connected 2 hard drives to the asmedia 1062 on the motherboard, the have there own iommu group.
the Asmedia 1062 showup correct in esxi host, i see my harddrives and i can make datastores.
So now the problems begins... when i enable the passthrough its says "reboot needed." I push the "reboot host" buttom and the ESXI host server is rebooting. when i go back to the settings its still says reboot needed and is not active. The PCIe device is not showup in the vm settings. Also the 2 harddrives connected to the asmedia are gone in the storage devices so its doing something.......
I try'd it with other devices like a Ati radeon 290x and a Nvidia 1050, also i try'd the USB3, they al work with passthrough without any problems, when i enables them its also says "reboot needed" and when i reboot they are on active. except the asmedia 1062, i try;d alot of thinks but it always says. "reboot needed"
How can i get the Asmedia on active so i can add them in the VM?
//sorry for bad English.
If you are in Engineering Mode on the NSX Manager you can run the following command to get the root password for the Guest Introspection VMs:
This password can be used to log in directly as root user on a local console (web console or VMRC) of the GI Service VMs.
Are you using an embedded or an external PSC?
Are DNS queries working in both directions, and is the reverse lookup working?
You could also try going back to the 10.* release (for some users that experiece the same problem that seems to work).
Just delete all the VMware folders in the Modules folder where you installed powerCLI (check which folder with the Get-Module -Name VMware* -ListAvailable).
Then install the 10.* version with
my psc is external, after restarting my server dns it worked but i still do not have instantclone commands i can not activate it
The InstantClone cmdlet is not in the PowerCLI modules.
If you need that one, then you would still need the Extensions.
Contrary to the VSAN cmdlets in there, that one is not available in the PowerCLI modules
I found these and views that shows when space I am using and how much I have available.
However, the only view that shows when I actually have it is the latest version of vSAN 6.7.
In previous versions, how do I see this free space that shows in the latest version of vSAN?
Check to see if the version of Horizon you are running supports LTSC 1809: VMware Knowledge Base
The VMware OS optimization tool hasn't been updated since July 2018. It doesn't have a template for that said version. Is your slowness happening on an image you apply the OS optimization template too?
I have the same issue as all others here. Broken pipe.
My only "workaround" was to disable mac's System Integrity Protection, which I should not need to do.
VM Fusion 7 Pro worked with zero problems for many years.
If this has been addressed in an updated version of VM Fusion, I have not seen it.

Help with vCenter converter standalone
We just stood up our VxRails with a vSphere environment and now we are attempting to convert our existing Hyper-V virtual machines running on a failover cluster on 3 Windows server 2012R2 nodes using the free utility vCenter converter standalone to convert the Hyper-V vms to VMware VM on vSphere infrastructure. In the converter, after selecting a source Hyper-V server with credentials and viewing the VMs running on this node, i selected a virtual machine that is powered off then click next but i get an error: "Permission to perform this operation was denied".
Another article i read suggested to edit a User Account Control in Security Options in Local Security Policy on the source VM but this didn't work either.
Anyone have a tip on converting Hyper-V vm to wmare vm?
Downgrading to an old PVSCSI driver worked for me. One with a 2009 date.
pnputil -f -f oem2.inf
pnputil -i -a pvscsi.inf
I noticed servers with old drivers succeeded so stumbled in to this workaround.
I have a few issues with upgrading Workstation....
Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.706)
VMWare Workstation versions 10,14 and 15
I have tried various things but no matter what I try when I upgrade version 10 to either 14 or 15 the following happens;
I have no idea who broke what but between VMware and Microsoft there are questions to answer.
I upgraded 10 to 14 no bother at all... all the problems started when upgrading 14 to 15 as that is when stuff started vanishing. I have even gone back to 10 and upgraded to both 14 and 15 but now VMnet0 just vanishes after the upgrade and no matter how I run the Virtual Network Editor (or who I add to the Network Configuration Operators group) VMnet0 is gone for good. And then there's the uninstallable VSock/hcmon .....
I am currently so angry and frustrated that stuff which is supposed to be simple to do is not anymore, so I'll just leave it there for now.
Is it solved? We have the same problem. Thank you.
Last year I installed ESXi 6.5 free version on one of our small office servers. Now we need to use it for another server. The 6.7 download is available after I login. I cannot find another page or link to create another free license for the new installation.
QUESTION: Can I use the same license key for multiple free ESXi installations? If not, what is the exact link for creating a new license key for the new host esxi installation?
CPU: intel core i3-8350k
MB: asrock z370-itx/ac
GPU: intel UHD 630, only one, no other graphic card
esxi version 6.7U1 10302608
no extra configure now.
I tried to install a windows 10 client in this host.
and passthrough this GPU to this client, then restart, success.
now, I can recognize this GPU in client and install graphic driver without any configuration, but my display did no output.
I can see windows system boot and do some operate in vmware host client, but it's just default svga card,
when I uninstalled this card and set svga.present=FALSE, my display still did not work.
but i can use it in remote desktop without any problems.
MB is OK, display is OK, system is OK, and the port is OK either in normal system and uefi.
it seems it's just something wrong with my display port in ESXI, it recognized the card but not the port.
so, what should I do to make GPU to recognize my display ? should I do something with grub or I need to do some configuration in host client ?
if there's some rule or confilct so I can't did it, did those 10$ USB VGA Card works on host?
↑ screenshot in remote desktop
You can use the license key for the free vSphere Hypervisor for a unlimited number of hosts (up to 100). This is what you can read on vmware.com.
Thank you, I wish this basic information was on the license page or next to the license key so users can know this without searching for hours.
Thanks for the information, but how do I revert the ones which are not MSCS? I can identify the RDMs in the SVC with their "naa...." identifiers. I have 2 hosts with many RDMs and I want to revert them back asap. A one liner would help me out... something like:
Get-host "hostname" | get-rdm "na...." | Set-perennially False
I am not a coder, so I realize the above does not exist. It would be the easiest and quickest way to revert. I don't mind running it multiple times with the same hose and correct "na...".
Thanks for the help. I didn't realize that my data was at risk!
Apologies on that.. I didn't know that goo.gl has been or is in the process of being shutdown... and while they say the links will still work, apparently that's not true in all cases;
At any rate I made a new one and will work on getting it distributed:
Make sure you join the slack instance, it's the place to get support.
Anyone ever updated Intel X710 NICs firmware on HPE DL380 Gen 10s? Theres a linux utility in the Proliant service pack but thats it. Any clues appreciated.
how do we get rid of this baloon on esxi 6.5? w VMRC? its often blocking messages during boot up that we (or users) need to be able to see.
very annoying vmware...
"In previous versions, how do I see this free space that shows in the latest version of vSAN?"
Capacity overview has been present since 6.0 U2 in the same place you found it in modern versions (FLEX Client):
Cluster > Monitor > vSAN > Capacity
Older versions won't show the 'Free Usable with Policy' though as this feature was only implemented later.
Was this information available in which version?
Can I view this information or otherwise infer using the previous version?
I have an environment with vSAN 6.5 and it does not show.
"- Why VMware shows RAW space (27.92TB) instead of just showing usable space (9.4TB)?"
Because multiple different Storage Policies can be applied to different Objects e.g. some data could be stored as FTT=0 and some data as FTT=1 (and obviously far more possible variations in larger and All-Flash clusters).
"- Can we block the use of space above the usable vSAN (9.4TB)?"
Unfortunately I am not presently up to speed on what ended up being implemented in 6.7 U2 with regard to 'guard-rails' but there are/were plans to start limiting things such as VM creation past certain thresholds. Either way though, from a administrator perspective there is no real control over "blocking" space.
"- Will any alarms be generated when near the usable space (9.4TB)?"
Yes, you will start getting warnings in vSAN Health once any individual disk passes 80% full and it starts rebalancing this data to other disks where possible:
"- If we go beyond the usable space? Will this cause what kind of problem for my environment?"
Like any storage system, the VMs need to be able to write to disk - if you run out of space on disks where these components reside then of course the VM will not be functional until space is freed up/rebalanced and it can write to disk. Obviously the solution to this is to size your environment accordingly and not run out of space.
"2 - Can you explain to me how vSAN does this 9.4TB calculation?"
It is very likely factoring in VMwares recommendation of allowing 25-30% slack space for temporary increases in used space (e.g. changing Storage Policy structure and of course snapshot-data during back-ups).
To set all LUNs on a number of ESXi nodes back, you could do
After that, you could use the previous snippet to only set the LUNs that are involved in the MSCS to perennially reserved.
"Can I view this information or otherwise infer using the previous version?"
Which information, 'Free Usable with Policy'? If so, then no as this was not present prior to 6.7 U1.
You can of course work this out by getting datastore size minus slack-space and then divide by 2 (assuming using FTT=1, RAID1).
Thanks Ben for your timely response. Curious about joining the Slack instance/workspace ('Slack ') . How does one get an invite or create an account to join? Currently, account creation is limited to select domains.
Thanks again for your expertise,
I try to run this and keep getting errors. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance...

Anyone have any information on this?
My setup is as following:
Amd Ryzen 1700x 8-core
64GB Ram ddr4
2x500GB SSD Micron
Im running 25 Windows 10 VM´s (2gb ram each and low cpu and space consumption)
When I try to power on the 26th VM I get internal error.
My CPU usage was stable around 5-10% until I added the last 2-3 vms, now it varies from 15 to 35% on idle
RAM usage- 61%
Is this error due to CPU max limit been reached? Plenty of RAM and drive left.
The vmdk file was configured as SPLIT_SPARSE. The files was split into 2GB expansion (files had more than 2GB, approximately 4GB, though) and the disk was using a scsi device node as PERSISTENT.
These information i got from another virtual machine with W7 that i had used in my office. When i have created that vm i used the same configuration.
How i can search using GPT or MBR signature? Would it be like search for recover partition formatted? Do you have suggestion which tools i can use to do it?
One more time, thank you so much for the help.
Version is 6.3.5
A firewall rule is automatically created to allow 443.
The requirement was to have users redirected to https regardless if they typed that in, however I suppose that would mean adding a rule for port 80. Thank you.
Is it possible to use the zip download from https://code.vmware.com/web/tool/11.2.0/vmware-powercli to install PowerCLI? Or use it as an upgrade to existing install?
We had this exact issue, it occurred roughly every 90 minutes or so-- at the same time Group Policy updated in the background. This occurred only over PCoIP for us, but try to replicate it by doing a gpupdate /force, your screens will flash if it's the same issue. For us this was caused by the "Configure PCoIP Image Quality Levels" ADMX setting, the issue was resolved after disabling that setting and allowing it to automatically dictate quality based on the bandwidth restrictions we set. In either case, if forcing a group policy update replicates the issue for you, it's likely one of your policies causing that like it did for us.
I am attempting to install windows on an external hard drive using my Mac, however am running into an issue within VM that others seem to be having also. My external hard drive is connecting, but only visible on my Mac. I have attempted to use the Virtual Machine --> USB --> connect
This does not resolve the issue, and if I go into the USB settings, it seems as the default is to connect to Mac and I am unable to change this.
Does anybody have any suggestions or see any issues that would prevent me from being able to install? Thank you in advance!
I configured the disks with the HDD type and a FLASH disk.
Actually my computer has SSD, but for some reason when vSAN detects all disks as SSD I can not proceed.
To achieve I needed to make all 40GB disks as HDD, leaving a 10GB as FLASH.
I created the VMKernel for each host with the vSAN service enabled.
However, I can not proceed on the following screen in fault domain:
Please share the log file for more details
Can this video help you
Yes, you can.
Just unzip the archive into one of the folders that are listed in $env:PSModulePath.
If you have an older release installed, just delete those folders before extracting the new files.
These folders all start with the name VMware.VimAutomation and VMware.VumAutomation.
If you have a very old version installed through a MSI file, you will first have to unistall through the Programs and Features control panel applet.
Once uninstalled, have a look in the Program Files (x86) folder if any PowerCLI folders are left behind.
If yes, just delete these folders manually.
Be aware that the folders in the ZIP file do not contain the version number subfolder.
As a result, in PS v5.*, you can't have multiple versions of the modules installed next to each other.
Download the VMware Tools Packages for Windows and Linux from the following site Or find newer Versions:
Download WinSCP for a friendly view of the ESXi File architecture > Log into your esxi host with issue
Navigate to "/.locker/packages" > Create Folder named "6.5.0" (If you are not using ESXi 6.5.0, this folder may be a different name. Check what folder name should be by going to "/productLocker" > Right Click > Edit > View where the shortcut goes to & create a folder with that name in that Directory)
Inside Folder 6.5.0, Paste The folders "floppies" & "vmtools" that were downloaded from the previous link.
You should now be able to successuflly install Vmwtools to your windows and Linux VMs
I uninstall and reinstalled but same error measage // logs[20-04] follow below... well???
